Pine Ridge Winery
At Pine Ridge, our passion is winegrowing. . . we grow 95% of our grapes because of our commitment to produce Napa Valley estate grown and bottled wines.
Winemaker Stacy Clark tastes grapes from every block in each of our 16 vineyards to ensure that fruit embodies the character derived from distinctive Napa Valley mesoclimates and terroir.
The health of our vines are monitored daily by our vineyard formen. We treat them like our children watching them grow from clones, carefully tending to their needs, and then gently hand harvesting clusters and delivering them to the crush pad for hand sorting.
You'll quickly recognize the Pine Ridge signature when you travel through Napa Valley. Our style reflects high-density plantings of narrow-spaced, vertically-trained trellised vineyards. We understand that more plants per acre with fewer grapes per vine produce wines of extraordinary texture and flavor.
Watch for thousands of brightly-colored Joseph's Coat roses lining the perimeter of our vineyards.
When you visit the winery in Napa Valley, we invite you wander through our demonstration vineyard where you will see a variety of clonal and rootstock comparisons.
Appelations:
Countless microclimates exist in Napa Valley with variations occurring from vineyard to vineyard. With more than 300 acres throughout renowned Napa Valley appellations, Pine Ridge currently owns vineyards in the following appellations:
Carneros
Chardonnay and Merlot vines in Carneros benefit from the marine influence of nearby San Pablo Bay. Overcast mornings and cool afternoon breezes contribute to a slow, even development of the grapes, thereby providing an optimal balance of sugar and acid. The shallow and rocky soil over a base of clay supplies just enough nutrients to support vine growth and fruit maturity. As a consequence, the stressed vines of Carneros produce smaller berries with a heightened intensity of flavors.
Stags Leap District
Cabernet Sauvignon wines from the Stags Leap District are indentified by their rich texture, supple elegant tannins and concentrated flavors of black cherries, currant and chocolate. Stags Leap District vineyards cling to the jagged Vaca Mountain Range to the east and extend to the valley floor on both sides of Napa Valley's historic Silverado Trail. The namesake mass of bare rock reflects the warming sunlight to the surrounding vineyards, while breezes from the San Pablo Bay cool the region by night.
Rutherford
Cabernet Sauvignon reigns supreme and represents more than half of the planted acreage in Rutherford. Here, in one of the oldest and most famous appellations in the Napa Valley, the deep, well-drained soils produce wines that possess layers of black cherry, blackberry and herbal flavors as well as the unique earthy character referred to as "Rutherford Dust."
Oakville
Though similar to Rutherford, Bordeaux style red wines produced in Oakville vineyards display more red fruit flavors such as bright red cherry, current & cranberry. The region spans the valley from the eastern Vaca Range to the Mayacamas Mountains on the western side. Soils in Oakville tend to be gravelly and provide the drainage necessary for the production of high quality Cabernet Sauvignon. Oakville wines are well-balanced with good fruit integration.
Howell Mountain
Located at 1,4000- 2,200 feet above sea level, Howell Mountain is the Napa Valley appellation with the highest elevation. Compared to the valley floor, this region experiences warmer summer temperatures and colder winters, leading to an abbreviated growing season. As a result, the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from this appellation develop thick skins, therefore robust tannins. With pronounced black fruit flavors, these wines are characteristically broad, dense and full-bodied. |
