Folie à Deux Winery

Napa Valley

Estate Vineyard
“Estate grown” means that the grapes used in making this wine were grown only on the winery property. This 13 acre vineyard surrounds the winery located at 3070 N St. Helena Hwy—about a mile north of the town of St. Helena Highway in Napa Valley, CA. The vineyard was replanted in 1996 which married the vines uniquely to the terroir; the upper vines, on rocky shallow soil, were grafted onto “St. George” rootstock and the rich bottom land has more natural moisture and required “5C’ rootstock for that reason. The mid slope soil has its own “Oppenhein 504” rootstock. In this way, each part of the Estate Vineyard is able to produce its own optimal quality Cabernet Sauvignon. The three parts are farmed according to their own individual requirements and each is harvested separately from the other two. After barrel aging, the three portions are recombined into our outstanding “Estate Grown” Private Reserve vintage wine. It is a perennial Gold Medal winner in professional wine judging’s and is ranked by the Wine Enthusiast as one of California’s Top 100 Wines! (1999 ranked in the top 1/3 of that prestigious list) !

Amador County

Harvey Vineyard
This is the oldest producing Zinfandel vineyard in California! The vines date back to 1869 and are now 131 years old. It is located on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California’s Amador County at 1600 feet elevation. The vineyard is planted on an 8 ft by 8ft spacing and cultivated in the old fashioned, head pruning method. It is on a steep north facing slope in Sierra Series Sandy Loam soil. It is dry farmed using no irrigation. For that reason the production is just under 3 tons per acre and the result is very high quality Zinfandel. It is the latest Zinfandel vineyard in Amador County to flower during spring and the last vineyard to be harvested in the fall. This produces a distinctive Zinfandel with flavors of chocolate, coffee and licorice. This is an exceptional wine from a unique and exceptional vineyard.
D’Agostini Vineyard
Those “Old Vines” know as the “Wild Bunch” vineyard are named after the often wild D’Agostini Brothers. The vineyard produces Zinfandel in a classic berry, peppery style. It is on an 1,800 foot mountain top on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California’s Amador County. The vines are planted in Sierra Series Sandy Loam soils. The vineyard is configured on an 8ft. by 8 ft. spacing and cultivated in the old fashioned head pruning method. This decades old vineyard is dry land farmed, using no irrigation, and is cross cultivated. It produces less than two tons per acre of highly concentrated Zinfandel fruit. This wine is always an outstanding example of the “best in Mountain grown Zinfandels”—year in and year out!

Eschen-Rinaldi Vineyard
This “Old Vine” vineyard is planted on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains overlooking the town of Fiddletown in Amador County, California. It is located 1,800 feet in elevation and planted in Sierra Series Sandy Loam soils. The vineyard is configured an 8ft. by 8ft. spacing and cultivated in the old fashioned head pruning method. This decades old vineyard is dry farmed, using no irrigation and is cross cultivated. It produced less than two tons per acre of highly concentrated Zinfandels from this vineyard since 1979. Fiddletown Zinfandel differs from the other Amador County Zinfandels in that they tend to have more natural acidity, producing brighter style Zinfandels with longer age ability.

Bowman Vineyard
This 30 year old vineyard sits atop Bowman Mountain with a commanding view of the surrounding Shenandoah Valley of Amador County. It is located on the western slopes of California’s mighty Sierra Nevada Mountains. The high elevations and good air drainage of this mountain vineyard is particularly suited to producing distinctive and flavorful Zinfandel wines. This is Amador County Zinfandel at its best, producing a berry-like, peppery wine with hints of mint and blackberries. The vineyard is pruned using the old fashioned head pruning method and dry farmed using no irrigation. It produces only 3 tons to the acre, which is less that 30% of the tonnage in many California Zinfandel vineyards. This wine is a Zinfandel that truly expresses the terroir of Amador.
